It's not your typical assessment
No doubt you've seen it before – the practice-based checklist, the consultant's rather lazy way of pointing out that you're not using their preferred tools, as though that rather than how your organisation works from your staff or your customers' perspective is the big issue!
We think there's a much better way, one that instead of provoking resistance, helps staff reach a shared understanding on how things are and fosters agreement on where change is most likely to be both effective. To illustrate how the Agendashift approach differs, here's a sample prompt from our assessment:
1.7 We share progress on our work frequently and are quick to collaborate as the need or opportunity arises
Already we're focused on outcomes! This is a much better place to start than "Do you conduct daily standup meetings, going round the room with the three questions?" or "Do you review your kanban boards from right to left?". If we establish that this prompt (one of more than forty) touches on a key issue for the organisation, we can explore options for improvement, secure in the knowledge that change here should receive wide support.
Taking it forward
The assessment can be used informally – in one-to-one coaching sessions or as input to a team retrospective for example – or as prework for an Agendashift transformation mapping workshop>. The workshop includes more people, seeks alignment with bigger organisational concerns, and generates more structured and far-reaching outputs, but either way heart of the process is the same. Based on agreement on where we are, which of the prompts lead us to outcomes we are particularly keen to see, and what action should we now take?
